From 25-28 June, the National Congress of Materials (CNMAT 2024) took place at the University of Malaga, bringing together experts to discuss the latest research and advancements of materials in Spain.

The XVII Edition of the event offered an attractive and engaging program with meetings, conferences and oral presentations on different aspects of materials, from processing and manufacturing to microstructural characterisation and the behavioural properties.

Included in the itinerary of presenting experts were Z-ONA4LIFE partners from CSIC, who were onsite to showcase how Z-ONA4LIFE innovations are facilitating circularity in the aluminium industry.

Isabel Padilla from the Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja (IETcc-CSIC), project member of Z-ONA4LIFE team, presented a speech entitled, "Effect of time and temperature on the formation of zeolite LTA from waste", in the Session 12.1 Processing, sintering and microstructural control technologies, at the Conference. In her address, she highlighted the most recent Z-ONA4LIFE project developments and breakthroughs, while expanding on how various experimental processing parameters influence the type and quality of zeolite synthesised from aluminium salt slag.

Pedro Carballosa, also from IETcc-CSIC, was onsite for his lecture on, “Use of zeolites manufactured from industrial waste in the preparation of cement-based materials”, in Session 07.2 Construction Materials. Pedro’s discussion focused on the advantages and potential applications of zeolites resulting from the Z-ONA4LIFE pilot scale process. He explored the effect of replacing cement with zeolites on the mechanical properties of mortars.
